a winter break

I've had a kindle for a half a decade or so , but I don't tend to use it too much. I'd been meaning to jailbreak it for a while. Finally, I got round to giving it a go.

I'd read that newer firmware versions couldn't be broken. Fortunately, mine had been sitting on a shelf for a while, on airplane mode. I charged it up, checked the version - all good and old - and filled up the empty space: dd if=/dev/zero of=rubbish bs=1M count=3000.

I started following the WinterBreak / jailbreak instructions. Nicely written and easy to follow. Not trusting myself to have filled up the empty space properly, I deleted the files I'd added, then walked through the Kindle-Filler-Disk process, leaving the default 20 MB free. Resuming the WinterBreak process it told me to restart (before copying the jailbreak code over). At this point, despite airplane mode being on...it updated.

And I am annoyed. Entirely my fault. Which is why it is so annoying. The e-ink RSS feed reader project will have to wait a little while longer.
